Flash Fill vs Text To Columns In Excel

In this tutorial we are going to take a look at how to separate first and last names using Text To Columns, and then see how we can accomplish the same thing using Flash Fill, plus so much more! Flash Fill is only available in Excel 2013 and later (sorry for those using earlier versions).

Here I have a list of names that includes numbering them from 1 to 10:

In this video, using Text To Columns, we are going to eliminate the numbers and separate the first and last names into two columns, while leaving the original text in column A, like this:

Then, using Flash Fill, we can replicate the same results more quickly, but even do some of the following with just a couple of entries:

We’ll even see how you can add some formatting when you Flash Fill!
