Recently we’ve talked about how to hide and very hide worksheets in Excel. In this tutorial we’ll look at how to hide an Excel workbook and why you may want to do that.
You can download the file here and follow along. If you get a preview, look for the download arrow in the upper right hand corner.
Here I have three Excel workbooks open:
I want to work on just two of them and be able to easily toggle between those two with Alt + Tab, but I know I will be needing the third file soon, and don’t want to close it since I don’t want to have to go looking for it, or maybe it’s a large file and may take a while to open.
All I need to do is make the file I want to hide the active one, then go to the View tab on the Ribbon. In the Window group there is an option called “Hide”:
All I need to do is click on that option. Now, that workbook is hidden and I can easily toggle between the other two.
To unhide the workbook, just go to the same group and choose “Unhide” and a dialog box will pop up listing all the hidden workbooks:
I just need to select the one I want to unhide and click on OK. And now all three workbooks are open and available again!
