Right Click Autofill In Excel

Several more options are available if you use your right mouse button when autofilling in Excel.

You can download the file here and follow along. If you get a preview of the file, look for the download arrow in the upper right hand corner.

Most of us are familiar with the Autofill button that exists at the bottom right corner of any cell:

Clicking on that with your LEFT mouse button and dragging it down can do several things like copying the entry in the cell above, or continuing on with a series of days or dates as in the following examples.

Would become this:

Notice how the days or months or dates are continued automatically when dragged down. Even a simple number can have a continued series. But what if you clicked with your RIGHT mouse button and dragged any one of these down? Let’s try the date:

Notice the menu that appears. And because it was a date, Excel activates the date relevant options such as:

Fill Days – this will generate a list of every day
Fill Weekdays – this will generate each day, but skip the two weekend days
Fill Months – this will generate 1/1/2014, 2/1/2014, 3/1/2014, etc…
Fill Years – this will generate 1/1/2014, 1/1/2015, 1/1/2016, etc…

Now, if we did the same with the number and selected the “Series” option at the bottom:

More options appear:

The Linear option will increase the number in a series based on the Step value indicated. For example, if we put a 3 in the Step value, you would get 5,8,11,14,17,etc…

Growth with a 3 in the Step value would produce 5,15,45,135,405,etc…

Try different options and see what results you get. Drop me a comment with how you can use this in your personal or business life.

Happy Excelling!
