The N Fuction in #Excel

Here are three uses of the N function in Excel:

You can download the file here to follow along. If you see a preview, look for the download arrow in the upper right hand corner.

There are many uses of the N function in Excel, but here are just three:

1) Convert TRUE or FALSE to 1 or 0
2) Determine the serial number of a date
3) Add a note to a formula

Convert TRUE or FALSE to 1 or 0

The formulas in cells F3 & F4 produce a TRUE and a FALSE:

n1

If I wrap those in the N function, it will convert them to 1 and 0:

n2

Determine the serial number of a date

Using the N function for a date will return the serial number of that date:

n3

Add a note to a formula

You may have a crowded worksheet with no place to add a title to describe the values in a cell. With the N function, you can add a note right in the formula so that by clicking on that cell, you can see some information about the data:

n4

These are just three uses of N. I hope one or more can be useful for you.

Happy Excelling!

I’m sorry you are having trouble viewing the video. I just checked it again and it clears on my computer after about 10 seconds in. It may just be a function of your internet speed.
